Douglas Southhall Freeman (1886 – 1953) was a Pulitzer prize winning historian. He is considered one finest American historical writers and his works make him one of the leading historians of his day. He won the Pulitzer Prize for his four-volume biography of Robert E. Lee (1934). He considered this work, Lee’s Lieutenants: A Study In Command, to be his finest work. His last work, George Washington, was published posthumously and he won the Pulitzer Prize in 1958.
