There are few sources of information about the Union Pacific in Idaho at the end of the steam era and "Smoke Down the Canyons" is a thorough and accurate survey of UP operations in the southern part of the state. Each branch and its facilities are briefly described and the descriptions are accompanied by photos of day-to-day operations. Many of the photos are framed to give a good idea of the area's general appearance; this is not simply a collection of locomotive roster shots. A careful reading yields a great deal of information about traffic sources and operating patterns.

The black-and-white book includes photos from Richard Kindig, Henry R. Griffiths, Lou Schmitz, Arthur Petersen and others.

"Smoke Down the Canyons" (1966) was reprinted in "Union Pacific Steam: Northwestern District," (1977, E&G Publications, Lib. of Cong. 77-073449) which also includes "Smoke Along the Columbia," Ehernberger and Gschwind's look at the UP's Oregon Division.
